Local Mission Opportunities
Jailhouse Rock: This team travels on the fourth Sunday evening of every month to bring a New Horizons Fellowship-style Celebration to the prisoners of Wake Correctional Center. Volunteers on this team help set up for and clean up after the service and at times may sit, talk and pray with the prisoners. Additional volunteers make up a band and worship team for the Celebration. Training is required by Wake County to join this team and is offered approximately four times a year.
Geriatric Jam: New Horizons has been in partnership with Rex Nursing Care Center in Apex since 2001. Volunteers go on the first Sunday afternoon of each month and provide worship for the residents, including praise and worship time, receiving prayer requests, and just spending time with the residents.
Hand of Hope: New Horizons has undertaken a partnership in 2010 with Hand of Hope, a pregnancy resource center in Fuquay-Varina. Hand of Hope offers resources such as counseling, pregnancy testing, ultrasounds and limited financial assistance to those experiencing unexpected pregnancies. For more information about the ministries of Hand of Hope, visit www.handofhope.net.
Western Wake Crisis Ministry: New Horizons has an ongoing partnership with Western Wake Crisis Ministry in Apex. WWCM is a food pantry and also helps to provide emergency financial assistance to people in the area. Once a year, typically in the spring, New Horizons conducts a food drive to contribute to their food pantry. New Horizons also partners with WWCM to assist children in need, providing school supplies in the summer and Christmas gifts in December. For more information about Western Wake Crisis Ministry’s work, visit www.wwcm.org.
Refugee Resettlement: Every other year, New Horizons partners with Church World Service in resettling a refugee family into the area. Having resettled a family from Iraq to the area in 2010, the next resettlement is anticipated to take place in 2012. Prior to the family arriving, New Horizons collects donations of household goods, furniture, clothing, and pantry items, helping to furnish the family’s new apartment. Upon their arrival, NHF team members meet the family at the airport to give a warm welcome and from then on help them acclimate to their new life in America. For more information about Church World Service, visit www.churchworldservice.org.
Habitat for Humanity: In 2010, New Horizons partnered with Habitat for Humanity along with six other area churches in helping to build a home for a refugee family from the Congo. For more information about the work of Habitat for Humanity, visit www.habitatforhumanity.org.
The Christmas Store: New Horizons Fellowship began offering The Christmas Store in 2004. Since then, Western Wake Crisis Ministry and Christian Community in Action partner with the church each year to register low income families in the Apex, Holly Springs, Cary and Morrisville areas to receive three gifts per child. The store opens for two days in December, allowing parents or guardians to select three gifts for each child, which are wrapped while children are cared for and parents are offered an opportunity to connect with additional area resources. The 2009 store served more than 1000 children. For additional information about The Christmas Store, visit www.nhf.cc/christmas-store.
